BRE – Latest test results (Grenfell Tower)

BRE has published the third set of results from its large scale ‘systems tests’, assessing the fire safety of whole buildings. The third test was of a wall cladding system consisting of ACM cladding with a fire retardant polyethylene filler (Category 2) with PIR foam insulation, with fire breaks and cavity barriers in place.

The Government’s Expert Panel’s advice is that, based on the test results, this combination of materials – ACM with a fire retardant polyethylene filler with PIR foam insulation – does not meet current building regulations guidance and therefore present a significant fire hazard on buildings over 18m.

The Government has issued further detailed advice to the owners and landlords of 30 buildings known to have this combination of materials.

BRE has also now published the fourth set of results from its large scale ‘systems tests’. The fourth test was of a wall cladding system consisting of ACM cladding with a fire resistant polyethylene filler (Category 2) with stone wool insulation, with fire breaks and cavity barriers in place.

This combination has passed the test, which means that it adequately resisted the spread of fire over the wall to the standard required by the current Building Regulations guidance as set out in BR135.
